VON MAL ZU MAL
Regular study of Celan’s poems, revealed a musical quality and strong visual artistic perspective which were new to me. These discoveries triggered in me a need to respond to the poems by creating sculptures, thus, to recreate some of his themes through my work.
My aim was to bring out the deeper meaning of his poems and to express them in a different way other than in words. My sculputres try to highlight another dimension of his work, to make accessable to the viewer feelings which the artist felt within himself, but was unable to bring alive in mere words. These sculptures therefore, offer the viewer a completely fresh and unexpected perspective of his work. The cycle “von Mal zu Mal” from the year 2005 consists of thirteen scuptures, twelve of which are solely dedicated to the poems of Paul Celan.
Paul Celan born in 1920 in Czernowitz, Bukowina, who took his own life in Paris in 1970, is considered to be one of the most influential and important German poets of the 20th century. His ascent to fame began with the well-received publication of “deathfugue” in 1952. The subject of these early works was the Jewish genocide committed by the Nazis, of which his parents were also victims.
